Modern cloth diapers are quite different then the flat cloth that was once folded and pinned to form a diaper. There are many different kinds of diapers that are made from an array of different cloths. Most diapers have many layers and modernly have buttons or Velcro to attach them, instead of the use of pins. There are many brands of diapers that even include elastic waist and leg bands to prevent leaking that once was a common problem. Newer models of diapers are easy and convenient and there are many different colors and prints.
It is almost always cheaper to reuse things then to use new ones every time. On a daily basis we reuse our socks, shirts, pants and even underwear after it has gone through the washing machine. What makes diapers different? Most parents go through thousands of disposable diapers per child, using 5-7 a day from birth until they are three. In comparison cloth diapers can last for years and can be adjusted to fit children of any size. On average parents who use cloth will only purchase about 300 diapers for each children. Think of the savings!! Of course using cloth will also require you to wash your diapers which in the long run will require the use of more detergent, water and electricity. However, the cost still should be much less when compared to the overall costs of disposable diapers.
Most parents are greatly concerned with their child’s safety, however most parents to not comprehend all of the chemicals that are present in disposable diapers. Chemicals that are used in the most common brands of disposable diapers have been shown to cause cancer, skin disease, liver damage and genetic deformation when absorbed in large doses. When your child is in the earliest stages of their life their skin is super absorbent and these chemicals could greatly affect them. Cloth diapers are natural and contain little to no chemicals. You can even find organic brands that are completely chemical free.
Cloth diapers are also more comfortable for your baby! Cloth is much more natural when compared to plastic. It allows more flexibility, more airflow, more room for growth and it is much softer on your baby. Babies who are diapered in cloth experience much less severe diaper rash when compared to babies who are diapered in plastic. Plastic diapers do not allow air flow and often trap in moisture against your child’s bottom. Cloth absorbs much of the moisture and also allows your child to dry naturally instead of uncomfortably.
Lastly cloth diapers are better for the environment. Close to 18 billion disposable diapers can be found in landfills throughout the United States every year. These diapers are not biodegradable so they build up and build up for decades, on average disposable diapers take 100 years to fully degrade. So while disposable diapers may be easily disposed by parents after their child has soiled them they are not disposable to the environment. Cloth diapers provide a way for parents to diaper their children in a way that is beneficial to the environment and promotes as little waste as possible.
