Cloth Diaper Pail
A dry cloth diaper pail allows you to store your childs soiled cloth diapers in a secure location until they can be washed and sanitized for further use. You can use any container with a lid that is, preferably, pretty air tight to prevent smell and leaking. You can line your container with a washable bag to prevent bacteria growth and promote cleanliness. It is best to avoid liners made of cotton, or like materials, because it will absorb the moisture and smell from the soiled diapers. With this type of pail it is best to rinse your diapers before placing them into the pail because there is nothing to prevent odor. You can simply shake off any waste from the diaper into the toilet and roll the diaper if preferred. This method is popular, however, it can have major disadvantages like smell, staining, and bacteria growth.
A wet cloth diaper pail seems inconvenient but is actually preferred because it eliminates odor, staining and kills bacteria. For this method you need a container that will completely seal and that can retain water. You want to make sure that if the container is to be tipped that it will not spill, as this can create stains and permanent damage. You should fill the container halfway full of water and then you can add items that will pre-treat the diapers. Vinegar, baking soda, and stain removers are all commonly placed within pails. Detergent should never be used because it is not meant to stay on cloth for long periods of time, and it will eventually wear down the diapers. You must change these pails daily to prevent the settling of bacteria in the fabric of your diapers.
Whichever type of cloth diaper pail you choose you and your family will be able to work out the best system for washing the diapers. With dry pails you can simply lift the cloth liner from the pail and empty it into your washer, placing it in afterwards. With wet pails you will need to drain the water from your pail into a sink or tub. Make sure you sanitize it after!! Once the water has been dumped you can dump the diapers into the washer. Often times diapers that have been stored in dry pails will need to be double washed because the stains and odors have been set. With wet pails one wash will usually remove all stains and odors.
